Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) is a common disease in ENT clinics; however, its etiology is unknown and may be complicated by several factors. The main symptom is sudden hearing impairment. In addition to hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo are also seen in these patients. Although the clinical treatments are numerous including steroids, anticoagulants and hyperbaric oxygen but the effects are not always clear. In particular, severe ISSNHL is seldomly recovered even the treatments are given. The 33-year-old female patient was diagnosed as severe idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss using pure tone audiometry (95dB) at ENT clinics. After a week of western medicine treatment, the situation has not significantly improved. The patient searched for help at Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine. After treatment with Chinese herbal medicine (Yi Qi Cong Ming Tang plus Polygala tenuifolia, Salvia miltiorrhzia and Acorus gramineus) and acupuncture (Ermen (ST21), Tinggong (SI19) and Tinghui (GB2)), the hearing capacity is gradually returning to normal and other related clinical problems have also been improved. This case report could be presented as an effective clinical case study of ISSNHL using Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture. |
