Healthcare providers believe that patients with heart failure need low levels of dietary sodium; however, it is challenging to estimate the daily sodium intake and thus challenging to follow a low sodium diet that can be evaluated by healthcare providers. Some studies have shown a correlation between the estimated sodium from dietary intake and urinary excretion. Typically, 18-31 hours after sodium intake, approximately 85-95% of the sodium is excreted through the urine. This article reviewed the method of estimating dietary sodium intake from urinary sodium excretion. This information could help healthcare providers estimate level of dietary sodium on patients with heart failure. |
