Primary malignant melanoma of the vagina (PMV) is extremely rare, accountingfor less than 3 % to all vaginal cancers. In women, only 1.6 % of melanomasare genital origin. The most common site is the vulva (70 %), followed by thevagina (21 %) and the cervix (9 %). The incidence of PMV is only 0.46 per onemillion women per year and with only around 800 cases reported in the literatureto date. The most common presenting symptoms include vaginal bleeding, vaginal discharge, and vaginal mass. Vaginal melanoma is often detected late, and this may be the most responsible for poor treatment outcomes and survivalrates. To date there is no clear consensus regarding treatment due to the rarity ofvaginal melanoma. |
