Although the United States and China have long held diverging views on a range of issues -- such as human rights, freedom of navigation issues in the South China Sea, and Taiwan, to name a few -- the relationship between the two most important powers in East Asia appears more fraught today than perhaps at any point since the normalization of relations 40 years ago. Bilateral relations were already strained even before the Trump administration came into office in 2017. |
