Social work supervision has become one of the important determinants of job satisfaction and professional knowledge of supervisors. The interaction between supervisors and social workers may affect the strength of their relationship, and may also affect the exercise of authority, the exchange of information and the expression of emotions. The purpose of this research is to deepen our understanding of several issues including how should supervisors establish relationship when they interact with social workers? Would there be any difference when supervisors try to establish relationship with social workers having different seniority, working experiences, or gender? How to establish supervisory relationship step by step? What kind of supervisory relationship would be expected both by supervisors and social workers? Several supervisors and social workers of one governmental social bureau in northern Taiwan were selected to participate in this study. The method to carry out this study was using focus group approach, which put the emphasis on the process that supervisors and social workers communicate with each other and how they establish a close rapport. Moreover, the focus group also tends to explore the methods and the process to establish supervisory relationship. It is hoped that the research findings here could serve as the important model, which could improve the quality of supervisory relationship, for new supervisors. |
