The article explains the functional aspect of the Five Spirits (五神) described in Lingshu-Benshen chapter (靈樞‧本神) of Huangdi Neijing (黃帝內經) . Shen (神) is the integrator of Five Spirits and physiological function of Shen includes cognitive function of human mind. Yi (意) represent a person's intellectual capability and consciousness; Zhi (志) is the long-term memory function and will of human mind. Hun (魂) served as an interface between body and mind. When Hun malfunctioned, unstable mentality can be observed. Po (魄) is the interface between body and environment, which governs movement and sensory function. |
