Our unit performed a total of 905 newborn screenings in 2016, and errors were discovered during the screening process, including filter paper rubbed or dried upright or placed under the radiator. Such errors motivated us to improve the accuracy of nursing staff performing newborn screening.Through analysis of the causes of errors, we discovered the following: nursing staff did not always follow the standard procedures, staff did not attach great importance to screening operations or cognitive deficits, the training program was imperfect, staff incorrectly followed standard operation procedures, screening procedures were incompletely implemented, and errors were made inputting items into the computer system. We implemented the following to improve screening performance: updated and corrected the computer system and standard operation procedure manual, promoted screening operation knowledge, designed the knack of newborn screening procedures, and replanned the training program. The newborn screening accuracy increased from 78.2% to 96.5%, and cognitive improvement increased from 62.6% to 97.4%. Thus, the project was effective.Through our project, we successfully ensured the quality of the newborn screening procedure and built a consolidated line of defense to protect the health of newborns. |
