Ya Si (1949-2013) is an important writer and cultural critic of Hong Kong. His unique intercultural perspective has been well presented, but the development of such a perspective within his works is often overlooked. Ya Si wrote his famous Paper-Cut and The Journey of Worry Dolls in 1977 and 1981 respectively. Both were originally novel series in newspapers and were rewritten and republished, while the latter one is renamed as Cities of Memory, Cities of Fabrication. During the revision, the political relationship of China and Hong Kong keep falling into tension or relaxation, while the local and Chinese cultures struck and fused together. By comparing different versions, this paper reveals how they act as coordinated outcomes of publishing mechanisms, personal and historical conditions, and how they responded to the local, national and world modernization since the late 1970s. It further traces Ya Si’s renewal of views on the relationship between the local and Chinese culture, and the development of his intercultural perspective. |
