The present experiment is designed to test a theory which b a combination of the two theories of Pavlov and Eysenck. According to the theory we can predict that schizophrenics should be generated from extroverted persons and their mental state in illness should be worse than those generated from introverted persons. 33 schizophrenics hospitalized in the psychiatry department of Jinchi Hospital were randomly selected only for the reason that they might be able to cooperate in this experiment. And 40 students of National Taiwan University were selected as the two polar extremes of E-score by Mausley Inventory Test. Every subject made 15 trials of reaction time to the three tone stimulus intensties, 90, 60 and 30db. Only the last 10 trials were calculated in the disccusion. The findings are as follows; 1) The RTs of schizophrenics (diagnosed by the doctors in the Hospital) to the tone stimuli are as long as the normals when the stimulus intensity decreases. This fact is not consistent with Venable's finding. 2) Significantly the RT of the introverted subject is shorter than that of the extroverted one, out for the schizophrenic subject this relation is reversed. That is, an extravert patient is quicker in RT than an introvert one. 3) An introvert person becomes significantly slower to react to out world stimuli when he breaks down in mental illness than when he is mentaly healthy. |
