Many studies reveal that thyroid malfunctioning affects human behavior. Our interest is to see whether the personality of a goitrous patient differs from that of normal people, and if so, what the 'goitrous personality pattern' is. Goiter is one of the regional diseases in Taiwan. The areas of the greatest goitrogenicity are Kan-yuen in Tao-yuen Hsien, Liu-chia in Hsin-chu Hsien, Pu-li in Yun-ling Hsien, and Yu-li in Hwa-lien Hsien. Our study was concentrated in Liu-chia, where 95.31% out of 1058 primary school children were suffering from various degrees of goiter in the year of 1956. The subjects used were 50 goitrous patients of various ages, both sexes, and different revels of education. The sample was regarded as representative of the inhabitants in the aspect of goiter population. Comparisons were made among the four groups of subjects, classified on the basis of degree of largeness of swollen neck, and between the goitrous group as a whole and Cheng's Control Group II which he used for comparing with his aboriginal group. This control group consisted of 20 subjects, all inhabitants of Taipei City, whose education was of primary school level. The comparison among the four goitrous groups revealed no statistically significant difference in the Rorschach response patterns; so with increase in size of goitrous tumor there was no obvious parallel change in personality. The comparison between the goitrous group and the corresponding normal group indicated that in intellectual aspects, the intelligence expression of the goitrous group was lower and the mode of approach belonged to a more detailed and concrete thinking type, and they were less able in controling their own ego, i.e., the ego strength was weaker, while the intellectual flexibility was greater. This denoted that it was easier for them to be acculturated. As for the experience type indexes, the goitrous group was poorer in the fantacy world, while the emotional maturation and experience balance of both groups were equal and normal. Associational contents showed a lot of 'An' responses, which meant that the goitrous group were overconcerned over their own health, probably due to their chronic neck disease. They were somewhat hypochondriac. |
