One's life is greatly affected by emotions, and the emotions are closely related to the environment one is in. The environment in which servicemen are placed is different from that of civilians: so is the condition of their emotions. Such mental states as are prevalent among the servicemen are not common among ordinary people, and what may be found in military life at present would not have existed before in their lives. Furthermore, some mental disturbances do not occur in times of peace, but they do in times of war. Shell shock, for example, was found among men at the front during World War I. Hearing the sound of a bullet in the air on the battlefield, men sometimes lost consciousness or became paralytic or anaesthetic. or unable to speak or to see. These men who could not go on fighting nor working at the front, had to go for medical treatment or rest in the base hospitals. No physical cause could be found, nor could they improve. |
