1. Mauritius is a small island situated in the west of Indian Ocean. Its size is approximately one twentieth that of Taiwan. Over the whole island the temperature is warm and the rainfall is experienced all the year round, it shares one of the well know marine climatic characteristics for tropical fruit growing like that of a subtropical country. 2. Fruits of importance are litchi, mango, longan, citrus, banana, avocado, guava, pineapple, coconut, papava and grape; the strawberry guava jujube, rose apple, jambolan (Eugenia jambos), batoko (Flacourtia rhamonti), dew berry (Rubus sp), Surinam cherry (Eugenoa unoflora), tamarind (Tamaeidus indica) and tropical almond (Termina catappa) are growing wild in the natural vegetation. 3. As far as fruit production is concerned, there is no commercial plantation. Few orchards exist on some estates; however, they are not properly managed. All fruits, seen at the maker, are obtained from dooryard trees. |
