The pineapple white amor scale resembles the pineapple mealy bug in type of injury and abundance. Recently this scale is widely distributed in Southern Taiwan. The infested pineapple plant there were lots of translucent whitish, thin flaky scales presented on the leaves and leaf axils. The insect body was beneath the scale. As its piercing and feeding introduce a toxic saliva into the leaf tissue and induce the infesting leaves became spotted with translucent yellow, then the small spot developed a brownish or a dark brownish color in the center. The injured leaf generally appeared a large number of light yellow spot with dark brown center. In some severe infesting plantation may seriously injure the healthy pineapple plant. Particularly it feeds in the axillary root or when it is almost completely covering the leaf-base, then the wilting effect will be resulted. In this investigation the pineapple white amor scale is attacked by two species of Aphelineds, Aphytis sp. And Aspidiotiphagus sp. The chemical control of this scale was the same as those with insecticide like parathion against pineapple mealy bug. |
