Ethephon treatment increased the diameter of hypocotyl, and retarded the tap root growth of mungbean sprouts. At the optimum temperature at 25 ± 2°C, with water supplied for every 3 hours, the most desirable treatment concentration was found to be 1O~20 ppm. Better resuts were obtained by three application of Ethephon at intervals of 24 hours beginning at 24 hours after seed sowing, or by one application of 10 ppm Ethephon at 24 hours after sowing, following by one applkation of 20 ppm Ethephon at 36 hours thereafter. Results were generally not fovourable with one application of Ethephon. Early treatment induced uneven growth of hypocotyl and enhanced the development of branch roots. While late treatment failed to reduce the length of roots, but promoted uneven growth of hypocotyl. Results indicated that at suitable concentration, the growth of roots were susceptibly inhibited than the hypocotyl by Ethephon treatment. |
