For seed potato propagation, the comparative growth and yield of potato by different propagules of Cardinal cultivar were investigated. Seven kinds of propagation sources including (1) conventional tuber pieces, 12-15 g each (2) rooted tissue culture plantlets (3) microtubers, 0.5-0.6 g each (4) apical stem cuttings from rooted tissue culture plantlets (5) single-node cuttings from transplanted tissue culture plantlets (6) sprout cuttings from tubers and (7) apical stem cuttings from young plants originated from tubers were planted in the field in nethouse. The statistical analysis was made on the data of plant height, yield of tubers, number of large and small tubers, total weight of large and small tubers obtained from all propagules. Conventional tuber pieces as well as the apical stem cuttings from tuber derived young plants gave the best performance for all the data recorded. Rooted tissue culture plantlets and microtubers, when planted in the field directly, gave the poorest yield of tubers which only counted for 1/6-1/7 of those from tuber pieces. The results from this experiment would be helpful for the improvement of seed potato propagation in Taiwan. |
