The effect of temperature on growth of Asplenium nidus L. (Bird's-nest fern) grown in lath house and phytotron at different day/night temperature of 30/25°C, 25/20°C and 20/15°C were studied. The phyllotaxy of the fern was 5:8 Fibonacci system. The development of frond exhibited non-typical S curve growth pattern. The great amount of increase in frond area of the ferns were at temperature range of 20-30°C, the sori formation were only found at 25/20°C. Growth was considerably low and chilling injury was found in fronds which showed the chlorotic and necrotic tissues at 20/15°C. Tissue analysis indicated that plants grown at lower temperature (20/15°C) contained lower nitrogen, potassium and calcium in fronds than plants grown at higher temperature (20-30°C). Different temperature treatments did not have large affect the respiration and photosynthetic value of frond disc. Although their metabolic activity are low. |
