The INIBAP Musa Germplasm Transit Centre (TIC) located at the Catholi'c University of Leuven, Belgium was established since 1985. Currently, it holds about 1050 accessions of Musa germplasm by in vitro method. For reason of safety, the Asia and Pacific Banana Duplicate Collection at the Taiwan Banana Research Institute (TBRI) was established after signing the MOU by the representatives of the two Institutes in 1993. The first batch of 153 accession from Asia-Pacific region was received by TBRI in the same year. In 1994, another 271 accession collected from Paupau New Guinea was duplicated and shipped to TBRI for storage. Shoot-tip tissue culture method is used to conserve the duplicate collection at TBRI. The culture is maintained at the minimal growth condition with 16°C and under the light intensity of 1000 lux for 12 hours each day. Each accession is kept in 6 to 12 test tubes. All accessions will be inspected for contamination regularly every month, and subcultured to fresh modified MS medium once a year. Safety device was set to prevent damage of germpalsm due to break down of the cooling system. The establishment of the Banana Duplicate Collection at TBRI provides an exemplary institutional committment to the intemational effort to conserve Musa germplasm. |
