The response of three eggplant (Solanum me/ongena L.) culitivars (cv.'Pingtung Long', Know-You Llong and Extra Long) to the inoculation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in celled-plug system and their growth in field were intensively studied. It was found that in each 72 celled-plug, Glomus spp. mixed inoculum contained about 180 spores was inoculated to the middle layer of medium, which resulted in about 50% of mycorrhizal infection, but the seedlings growth did not show any significant difference between mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal control. A mixture of the BVB#4 : vermiculite = l: I (v/v) provided the best seedling growth and higher mycorrhizal infection. Reducing the phosphorus concentrations of Johnson's solution had no effect on the formation of arbuscular-mycorrhizae in eggplant. The field trial results showed that the Glomus spp. or Gigaspora sp. infected mycorrhizal eggplant not only enchanced earlier flowering, but also increased fruit production than the non-mycorrhizal control. It was concluded that mycorrhizal eggplant seedlings showed great potential for practical use. |
