E-commerce has been viewed as being either a threat or a way of providing a more effective service for physical office activities, thus giving rise to a controversy that the relevant literature has so far failed to discuss. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explore the objective relationship between physical office activities and E-commerce by taking into account its functions, such as relevant business information provided, on-line orders, and account transfers involving electronic transactions. The data are obtained from the ”Industry and Commerce General Survey” (2001), compiled by the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, Executive Yuan, R.O.C., and applied to analyze how E-commerce has influenced the financial and service industries in the Taipei megalopolis. The results of the empirical studies indicate that there is not enough evidence to suggest that E-commerce could substitute for physical office activities. The functions of E-commerce cause the demand for space to increase in the financial, computer and consulting sectors. However, we seem to be unable to prove that e-commerce has an effect on office rental and location. |
