Wu Xi-Sheng published his "The Story of Yang Zhao-Jia, the Remembrance of Propeller" on the March 1935 issue of "Literature Taiwan". The article was based on a well-known Yang Qing-xi air disaster, while Yang Zhao-Jia was a real character who was quite famous for his role in political movements in Taiwan. While we compare historical facts with the article, we find that it was a true story. The author handled reportage in a fictional style in order to convey how well-educated Taiwanese at the time resisted the ruler, trying to discard government's paradigm and manifest how Taiwanese recognize themselves with dignity. When matched with Yang Kuei's "Investigation and Assistance to Taiwanese Earthquake Areas" (June 1935), Wu's article was written earlier and better organized, with more outstanding description of characters as well as scenes. We may well say that this article is the reportage in Taiwanese literature. |
