Since Dong Nian has long been neglected in the literary criticism academic of Taiwan. This paper aims to reconstruct interpretive frameworks of Dong Nian's novels. By in-depth studies into Dong's theory of creation, this essay uses writings which give warnings to delve into his key work Model Citizens on the eve of his transition and characteristics of his writings in early years. This essay suggests that Dong's novels finding no keenly appreciative readers lies in his maverick persistence of literary ideas of humanities and social sciences and the path of creation for “Clairvoyant Writing” that make him become an “alien” in the mainstream discourse of contemporary literary. In fact Dong's novels and modernist novels, realistic traditional novels seem to be superficially similar, the intention and lasting charm will lead to frequently-seen different tones. An interpretation of Model Citizens has led readers to find Dong's creation focusing on highlights of all types of magically changed values of “A Clamor of Silent” modern people will encounter in the context of social changes from rural to urban aspects. Social conflicts are hidden in the “A Clamor of Silent” that no one knows when they will explode just like a pressure cooker exactly embody the intention Dong wants to express in his writings which give warnings. |
