“Hōjōki,” written by Kamo no Ch_mei, is a short work belonging to “Ki” genre, following the pattern of “Chiteiki.” It is a representative work of the early Kamakura period, showing the author's attitude toward impermanence. Many studies have indicated that “Hōjōki” is a well-structured book which should have been done with close scrutiny and careful thought. Experiencing the intense change of time from the late Heian period to medieval period, the Japanese literati turned not only to Buddhism, but also to a wide variety of books for comfort and mental support. This paper aims to refocus on the prologue of “Hōjōki,” to examine Chōmei's comprehension of the impermanent world, and to study what kind of role Chinese literature played in this prologue. |
