Research on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) used by patients with lymphoma is limited. This study explored CAM use among patients with lymphoma for follow-up treatment. Special attention was paid to patients' changing patterns of CAM use before and after diagnosis with lymphoma, their experience of CAM, and their management of CAM use with conventional medicines through a retrospective cross-sectional survey (n=548) in Taiwan during 2009-2016 (response rate: 87.4%). Patients with lymphoma reported extensive use of CAM with conventional medicine. CAM use was 6.8% before and 31.1% after lymphoma diagnosis, with herbal remedies being the most commonly used CAM before and after diagnosis (p=0.001). However, CAM recommendations by health care professionals remained low (5.4%) and CAM use for treating cancer was common (41.3%). Awareness of widespread CAM use by patients with lymphoma is crucial for health care professionals. CAM use after lymphoma diagnosis is common, and health care professionals may provide information concerning CAM for treating cancer and its symptoms. These findings may inform the decisions of clinicians and researchers regarding clinical practice and research on CAM. |
