Glucocorticoids are widely used in the treatment of various diseases. They alleviate many symptoms and make them relieved. Interest in the role of glucocorticoids in the pathophysiology of critical illness has existed since the early part of the 20^(th) century, when investigators observed that the adrenal glands are crucial to survival under conditions of physiologic stress. Glucocorticoids are one of the most common medications that are used for a variety of indications in the intensive care units, and its role has been explored and discussed continuously. This article has compiled some of the latest clinical guidelines and documentary evidence to provide medical professionals with the correct use of systemic glucocorticoids, although there is still a controversial area of modern critical care practice. |
