Ever since 1994, the mainland China has begun venturing into the world of internet. The last decade saw the fast development of on-line insurance industry prompted by the onslaught of novel technologies, the flourishment of funding capital and the ever-expanding supporting policy options. In spite of the profits accruing to the insurers, on-line insurance may also beg questions of new-type risks that history provides us with little experience. Additionally, a divergence in the conception of on-line insurance between the insurers and the internet companies, the two major players that hold themselves out to be leaders in this market, seems to exist with on-line insurance actually taking on a different quality in the eyes of these two respective players, a serious impediment to further development of on-line insurance. Thus, this article, by looking back on history and relying on data, attempts to map the contours of on-line insurance in mainland China, to give a glimpse of its drivers, to identify its problems and to argue that ecological insurance, technology insurance and social media-based insurance together constitute the most realistic solutions. Hopefully, on-line insurance, borne in optimism, would not decline amid disappointment. |
