This article describes the nursing experience of caring for a 22-year-old woman who experienced dust burns to 60% of her body. The author helped the burn patient through the experiences of wound healing, posttraumatic reaction, and social reconstruction. During the nursing period- June 27th to July 27th, 2015- Gordon’s 11 functional health patterns were used for assessment, and care was supplemented with active care, listening, and empathy. The symptoms noted for the patient included physical and mental changes, pain, and posttraumatic reaction. The author typically employs pain control techniques, diversions (e.g., listening to Buddhist scriptures), and massage (Cukor et al., 2014), among other techniques, and enables patients to understand future treatments, share their inner feelings, and harness positive energy to reintegrate themselves socially with their family. Nursing staff should have the relevant professional knowledge and provide patients with confidence; this was the author’s motivation. The author finds patients easily become restless and require accompaniment by their family. The author hopes nursing staff can be flexible in planning meeting times to accommodate this wish and appease patients. |
