Validation of Clipped-optimal-control with variable gains(COC-VG) is pursued in this study. COC-VG is designed to manage two 20 kN magnetorheological dampers in the hybrid-controlled base-isolated structure for mitigation of seismic loads. In order to develop a robust controller that is sensitive to a variety of excitations, the traditional clipped-optimal control with variable gains is proposed. Two or more objection matrixes in the LQR control algorithm are designed to handle different intensities of excitations. The designed control gains will vary online with the stroke of the base-isolation system to gain more control efficient with the consideration of the stroke limits. COC-VG are designed and validated through numerical simulation and full-scale experimental shake table tests for a variety of seismic excitation. Results show that COC-VG is robust and effective in reduction of both displacement and acceleration responses for both near-and far-field seismic events. |
