In this research, we attempt to provide a suggested performance-based seismic design guideline for new buildings. Firstly, we adopt the framework of SEAOC-99 as the major methodology for performance-based design and briefly describe in detail the key procedures in the adopted methodology. In the preliminary design stage, we adopt the displacement-based design approach but use the inelastic response spectra instead of the one in SEAOC-99 Appendix IB which utilizes the concept of elastic spectra with equivalent damping and period. We also address some key issues in the displacement-based design. Finally, we give a simple illustrative design examples based on the proposed displacement-based design approach to meet the selected performance objectives. |
