2001 saw a dramatic and rapid increase in bandwidth for TANet2, the research network that connects major educational institutions in Taiwan. Starting in August 2000, the bandwidth of TANet2’s double-star backbone configuration was increased to 250 Mbps and the branches were increased to 50 Mbps each, thus, resulting in a dramatic increase in Taiwan’s network capacity. Beginning in October 2001, TANet2 began carrying traffic incrementally to college dormitories in order to make the network more accessible to professors and students. Students can now conduct research inside their own rooms. Consequently, the network traffic began to rise, but within the predicted pace. |
