Backpacking has become a popular type of tourism because of the global increase in individual autonomy and local awareness. Research on backpacking has yet to clarify the relationships among the value pursuits, travel characteristics, and benefits of backpacking. Therefore, this study examined data from interviews with 60 Taiwanese backpackers who had visited Japan. The means-end chain method was adopted to explore the backpackers' values, benefits, and attribute preferences. The research findings revealed seven characteristic factors, eight travel outcomes, and five value pursuits attracting backpackers. Experiencing local culture and expanding horizons were the primary outcome and value pursuit, respectively. Sex affected attribute compositions, which were more diverse among men. Age also caused different value hierarchies. Backpackers aged 25 years or older pursued relatively diverse values. The present study is conducive to understanding the characteristics, preferences, and value pursuits of Taiwanese backpackers. The results can serve as a reference for backpackers in terms of planning future travel. |
