The purpose of this experiment was to investigate how the effect of Gancao on Guamutong (contain Aristolochic acid) - induced acute renal toxicity in rats. Forty-eight female SD rats were randomly separated into eight groups - a control group; a group of 30 g/kg of Guamutong in rat; a group of 30 g/kg of Guamutong combined with 1 g/kg of Gancao in rat; a group of 20 g/kg of Guamutong in rat; a group of 20 g/kg of Guamutong combined with 1 g/kg of Gancao in rat; a group of 10 g/kg of Guamutong in rat; a group of 10 g/kg of Guamutong combined with 1 g/kg of Gancao in rat; a group of 1 g/kg of Gancao in rat. Rats in the eight groups were given different doses of herbs for one week using the gastric tube. We surveyed the general condition, the histology of the kidney, the data of the renal function of blood in the rats. Then we analyzed the results using the SAS packages. Among the groups with different doses of the Guamutong, we found the rats' weight and activity dropped significantly and necrosis area of their epithelium in the renal tubules as well as the biochemical level of BUN and creatinine rose significantly, and these results were dose-dependent. However, these effects of Guamutong were attenuated as feeding the rats with the Gancao. These results indicated that the Gancao may decrease the acute renal toxicity of Guamotong based on the histological and laboratory observations. |
