The development of 3D printing technologies evolves rapidly. In recent years, orthopaedic surgeons starts to apply the technology in orthopaedic surgeries. A simulated physical model can be created after converting an image profile of computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) into a file format which can be recognized by a 3D printer. This 3D physical model helps surgeons understand the precise individual anatomy and fracture pattern. It also facilitates pre-operative planning including simulated surgery, improved medical team communication and implant selection. If there's no ideal implant, a customized implant can be made according to the model. Moreover, the model can be sterilized and let surgeons review the anatomy again intraoperatively. Therefore there are numerus advantages by applying the technology in orthopaedic surgeries. This article comprehensively reviewed the application of 3D printing technology in extremity fractures. |
