Within a shipyard, designers have their own design objectives and moreover apply different software on heterogeneous hardware platforms; nevertheless requested collaborative operation still remains in the complex design circumstance. CAD systems are used on a higher level of design stages in each section, and these approved designs are usually delivered as paper drawings. For duration of the design, 3D models, referred to 2D AutoCAD drawings from the functional design stage, are constructed as the pre-processor model of finite element analyses, and reconstructed manually into the Tribon system for practical production; this kind of process takes much time and cost consumption. In order to overcome the drawbacks, by utilizing earlier 2D information, to construct shared 3D product models as earlier as possible enables not only to reduce the proportion of 2D drawings over the structural design phase to streamline the design processes, but also to offer the consistent product model data for different stages' utilization, avoiding repetitious works to modelling.
