An Orchid in Singapore, authored by Sasaki Joh, depicts Singapore from the end of 1941 when Japan commenced Malayan Campaign and attacked Pearl Harbor, to August, 1945 when Japan surrendered to the Allies. Liang Guangqian, the main character of this novel, is a Hakka from Taiwan, and works for a Japanese merchant who lives in Singapore or Shonanto as it was called under the Japanese occupation. His body was characterized by his transborderness even before coming to the island, and the body has been maximized in the British-ruled and Japanese occupied Singapore, and also through the experience of joining the anti-Japanese volunteer army consisting of oversea Chinese and having a hand in the assassination plot against then Japanese prime minister Tojo Hideki, secretly planned by the members of the Malayan Communist Party. It cannot be said, however, that his character; grown up in a Hakka family in Taiwan, studied at a commercial school in the capital of Japanese empire and works in Singapore, is unnaturally exaggerated in the context of the period. This paper would like to focus on the following four aspects; Guangqian's name with several readings, multi-layered ethnicity of 'Chinese,' Guangqian's behavior based on his Hakka identity, Guangqian as a subject of the empire but not necessarily as a "Japanese."By doing so, it is expected to understand how Guangqian's transborder body is drawn in "Shonanto"against the backdrop of the closing years of Japanese empire. |
