FARM MANAGEMENT PROBLEMS AND THE ROLE OF MANAGEMENT EXTENSION IN THE ADOPTION OF NEW TECHNOLOGY BY SMALL FARMERS

Throughout the history of agriculture, we experience that the family farm has been the main farming unit in the private-enterprice economy. By a family farm, we simply meant a farm operated and managed by the labor of one family, and may included a small amount of part-time hired labor (13, 17) Some people, however, refer to a family farm on the basis of acreage. Only the farms with small holdings are classified as family farms, the others are not. Particularly in the region of Southeast Asia, most farms are small farms, so they are all referred to as family farms. But it is also the fact that more than 95% of the farms in the Unite a States are family farms. So defining a family farm by size will by misleading. Snodgrass and Wallace emphasize that farming operations run by one family range from a few acres of intensive vegetable farming to several thousand of acres of cattle range.
