On the Origin of Flank Observation

在測量工作中，應用到各種不同的幾何條件，因時適地底達成定位目的，「側方交會」是其中一個基本的方法。回顧其英文名詞，除直觀的「side intersection」外，另有一個名詞：「flank observation」。於究論名詞之際，了解到其由來與軍事作業有關。謹此介紹如下，以為參考。經探究文獻中之描述，「flank observation」應對應「側方觀測」，但不是「側方交會」。就數學面而言，「flank observation」是典型前方交會之一種應用。 Utilizing different geometric constraints for obtaining the position of a location, frequently incoordinates, is a typical work for surveying. Among all these methods, “side intersection” is oneconsidered as among the basics. Besides the term “side intersection”, this method is also known as“flank observation”. Tracking the origin of this term, it is found that this term is originated frommilitary operation. This is introduced in this note for readers’ reference. Based on the literatures, “flankobservation” is observing from side, geometrically, it is a typical case of “space intersection”, not “sideintersection”.
