An Experimental Exhibition Approach-Visitor Study of Special Exhibition 'Voyage of the Past'
Voyage of the Past:Living Technologies in Taiwan's Early Restoration ' is a special exhibition of the National Science and Technology Museum that aims to disseminate the scientific knowledge in a contextual approach. This study examined the visitors' behavior in reading the flipper labels and their cognition to the contextual exhibition. The result of the study provides an important guideline for the planning of future exhibitions. Through observing the visitors' behaviors and conducting personal interviews, we discovered that about eighty percent of the visitors read more than one flipper label. As to those who did not read them, we found out that the main reasons were: 1. Limit of time, 2. Not paying attention to them, 3. Fail to operate the flipper labels, 4. Lack of interest, and 5. Too many visitors to notice them. Most of the visitors agree that the contextual environment can help them understand the meanings of the artifacts. Upon investigating visitors' behaviors, there are factors that contribute to the contextual feeling: exhibition space, artifacts, audio and visual effects, texts and colors of lighting. In the post-visit studies, we learned that, for most visitors, their satisfaction of going to the museum is much more important than their learning of science. At the end of the study, we proposed three suggestions for future exhibition planning: 1. Make better use of the space and artifacts, 2. Improve the function of the exhibition labels, and 3. Interpret the scientific meanings from the emotional perspectives.
