A Study of Taihoku High School Students Graduated from Shinchiku Middle School
Using the “Student Registration Book of Shinchiku County Shinchiku Middle School” in the collection of National Hsinchu Senior High School, this paper discusses those Taiwanese and Japanese students of Shinchiku Middle School who graduated to Taihoku High School. It aims to investigate the relationship between these two schools and the process of elite education during the Japanese colonial era and produce a clear picture of elite education in Taiwan’s modern history of education. Taihoku High School, the “predecessor” of today’s National Taiwan Normal University, was one of 38 high schools established by the Japanese government pre-WWII throughout the Empire of Japan for development of elites, and was the only one established in Taiwan. In principle, graduates from Taihoku High School were given the privilege to advance to Taihoku Imperial University, the only university in Taiwan at the time, or the imperial universities of Tokyo, Kyoto or other major Japanese cities without taking any form of examination. The senior class of Taihoku High School admitted only 120 Taiwanese and Japanese students every year, graduated from 17 middle schools throughout Taiwan. It is not difficult to imagine how fierce the competition was in the school admittance examinations among these lower secondary school students. Shinchiku Middle School, where Taiwanese and Japanese students studied together, was established in 1922, the same year Taihoku High School was founded, and closed in 1945 when WWII came to an end. During its twentysome years of operation, 71 Taiwanese students graduated to Taihoku High School. The number of Japanese students was smaller than this. The “Student Registration Book of Shinchiku County Shinchiku Middle School” in the collection of National Hsinchu Senior High School is used as the primary historical source of statistical data. By combining the registration book, the remaining collection of old books at these two schools and the education system and curricula, the relationship and content of elite education connecting these two schools are constructed.
