這是萊頓大學（Leiden University）魏希德教授Hilde De Weerdt的第二本專著，相應於她的第一本書Competition over Content: NegotiatingStandards for the Civil Service Examinations in Imperial China （ 1127-1276）（Cambridge, MA and London : Harvard University Asia Center, 2007.）1（《義旨之爭：南宋科舉規範之折衡》，浙江大學出版社，2015）專注於科舉制度，思考士大夫和朝廷以至各種思想與政治組織在此間的協商過程；本書更著重於析理12 世紀以降中國菁英階層廣泛共有的感受，亦即他們對領土式界定的單一國家（ a territorially defined unitary state）的歸屬感。
