The purpose of this paper is to interpret Oedipus Rex in terms of Wolfgang Iser's theory of reading as manifested in his essay 'The Reading Process: a Phenomenological Approach.' Reading Oedipus Rex, the reader may get the impression that through putting together the various pieces of information as offered by several characters in the play, the protagonist Oedipus is able to discover the truth of his life. And this process of discovering the hidden truth is very similar to the process that a reader undergoes in making out a text. |
