This paper compares traditional and modern marriages from the perspective of the confucian tradition. The research methods include field observation, classical literature survey, and inductive analysis. This study finds that the traditional chinese marriages had a focus on having a son to carry the husband’s name and serving the parents of the husband, whereas the modern chinese marriage is a milestone of a relationship. As a matter of fact, a relationship, whether between lovers or spouses, requires continuous self-reflections and collaboration of both partners. Based on this obseration, this study presents 21 questions for those who are in a relationship, and 21 principles for those who seek a satisfying marriage. The author hopes that the findings of this study could increase understanding of and provide scholarly contribution to the nature of traditional and modern relationship and marriage. |
