After a short introduction into the CoE in general and its work as a 'human rights watchdog' and a 'guardian for democracy and the rule of law,' the presentation will be structured around two important outcomes of its work in education for human rights and democracy. The Council of Europe Charter on Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education is a legal instrument, which provides a common reference and framework for action. It has proved to be a good basis and instrument to work with in the field of education for democracy and human rights in Europe and worldwide. And the Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture is a new approach to define and assess competences required to participate effectively and live peacefully together in culturally diverse democratic societies. |
