In 2015, a plane of the TransAsia Airways crashed in Taipei. Back in 2002, a similar event happened when a plane of China Airlines crashed in Penghu. In order to understand if the Taiwanese newspapers have changed the way they report disaster news during the past decade, content analysis concerning the genres of news stories, the themes of the news frame, the leading roles in the news reports, the directions of the news reports, the main sources, and the secondary sources was conducted in this research, using samples from the four major Taiwanese newspapers, the Apple Daily, the United Daily News, the China Times, and the Liberty Times. Results indicate that the way Taiwanese newspapers report disaster news in 2015 differs from 12 years ago in several respects, including the genres of news stories, the themes of the news frame, the leading roles in the news reports, the directions of the news reports, the main source, and the secondary source. Based on the results, the researcher suggests that when dealing with important disaster news, the Taiwanese media should avoid exaggeration for commercial purposes. Moreover, reporters should play the important role of informing and warning, and they should report news stories in depth. Additionally, reporters should always reinforce the quality of their reports and make sure that disaster news contains important information for the audience. |
