Aims: Investigate the effectiveness of lectures in teaching rural elementary school students to value Taiwan's National Health Insurance(NHI) program and to use medication correctly. Objectives and methods: A total of 107 fifth-grade elementary school students from two rural areas in Yunlin County were included. For the experimental group, an intervention involving three lectures was given regarding valuing and conserving Taiwan's NHI program as well as the correct use of medication. The 'National Health Insurance Education Questionnaire' by Professor Chen-Yin Tung and 'Survey of Knowledge and Experience on Five Core Competencies for the Proper Use of Medication in Schools' by Professor Shang-Yun Jii were used to evaluate students' knowledge about Taiwan's NHI, proper resource conservation behaviors, and correct drug use. Results: After the intervention, the students in the experimental group demonstrated significant improvement in their knowledge of the NHI, resource conservation, and the proper use of medication, but no differences were observed for the students in the control group. Conclusions: Results may provide a model for future curriculum design in schools and help form government advocacy strategies. |
