Tang(1979) found that in a DE(的)phrase (XP+DE+NP), a quantifier is not al-lowed to occur before the head noun (the position after DE) if the phrase before DE is a combination of verb+object. In this paper I further examine this issue. I have discovered that when the XP is a common noun or an adjective, it disallows a quantifier occurring before a head noun of a DE construction. The paper aims to find out the relationship between the XP and the post DE position quantifier. The study concludes that when the reference of an XP is specific, it allows a quantifier to occur before the head noun; if the reference of an XP is not specific, it does not allow a quantifier to occur before the head noun. |
