From analyzing two very popular novels, 'Water legend' and “Romance of Confucian Scholars', Li and Thompson concluded that the fundamental strategy in decoding a text in Mandarin, especially interpreting zero pronouns in the text, is inferences on the basis of pragmatic information provided by discourse context and the knowledge shared by the speakers of the language. (Li and Thompson, 1979) They argued that the interpretation cannot rely on structure, i.e., grammatical relations or functions. They used 11discourse context' to emphasize that the contextual information is in the discourse level rather on structure level. Webster's New Twentieth Century Dictionary defines 'context” 1. the parts of a sentence, paragraph, discourse etc., that occur just before and just after a specified word or passage and determine its exact meaning. 2. the whole situation, background, or environment relevant to some happening or personality |
