Wm. Theodore de Bary has great influence on the Oriental studies and general education in the United States through his edition of three Introductions to Oriental Civilizations. This article traces from his own education the origins of his conception of general education to Song and Ming Confucianism and Contemporary Confucianism, and the conception of core courses to the curricula of Zhu Xi's academy (Shuyuan). This article then introduces Durkeim's discourse of the history of Classical education in France since the sixteenth century and Hutchins's conception of liberal arts and general education. By their comparison, this article discusses the characteristics of de Bary's conception of general education. |
