A health care institution needs to redesign its facility plan when its operation grows and expands. The Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH) is no exception. The second phase of its expansion plan has reached a milestone when the construction of new campus building was completed and the operational trial started on September 19, 2014. All facilities, equipment, instruments, and materials have to be rearranged and realigned in order to achieve the maximum effectiveness, which is exactly the purpose of doing this Facility Planning exercise. The delivery process of patient test samples also needs to be included in the planning consideration. ARENA simulation software tool was used to greatly help the facility planning of central laboratories not only in improving the operational efficiency and lower the workload, but also in tremendously reducing the risk of loss caused by set-up errors. As revealed by this study results, the current operational evaluation on average testing equipment usage except in the areas for urine and blood testing technician, and CBC analysis technician and administrators. Thus, the overall operational process and functional load is acceptable. Therefore, the pathology laboratory may consider to streamline its urine testing, blood testing, and biochemistry testing process by rearranging the production line of testing equipment based on the “shortest moving distance” principle. This study also presented a recommended facility planning set-up diagram for FEMH as a reference of a model pathology laboratory. |
