The Zhangping Yongfu (漳平永福) dialect is part of the dialect continuum found in the western part of Southern Min, and is used in the transitional zone between Min and Hakka. Due to the long-term interaction between Min and Hakka peoples, the Yongfu dialect in southwestern Fujian(福建) has developed unique phonological characteristics, which are different from common Southern Min dialects such as Amoy(廈門), Zhangzhou(漳州) and Quanzhou(泉州). The basis of the Yongfu dialect is the Zhangzhou dialect even though the pronunciation forms of Yongfu are very different from those of Zhangzhou, The phonological characteristics of the Yongfu dialect can be categorized into the following two groups: the common features of dialects found in the western part of Southern Min, and unique developments found in the Yongfu dialect. The former category denotes the evolution from exposure to Hakka dialects, which can be demonstrated by the addition of an initial g before i or u vowels. Characteristics belonging to the the latter category are most clearly evident in the chain shift where Tang Kai San(宕開三) becomes the rhyme iη. |
