This paper explores previous scholars’ understanding of the concepts of literary form and genre, with a focus on Ming and Ch’ing dynasty critics’ points of view regarding these two concepts. The purpose of this exploration is to attempt to redefine them from the perspective of a literary historian. The paper is divided into three parts, devoted to the issues of form, genre, and their relationship, respectively. The methodologies taken include philological analysis and theoretical analysis. The concluding part of the paper focuses on the notion of relative determination which explains the basic link connecting the form with the genre. |
